Dan Bolden lived with us until he died. We lived on "White Row" in Anniston, (9th. street) when mom went to Eutaw, Greene County and brought him back. We my brother John and sisters Minnie and Gwen spent many evenings listens to old stories about the "old times", ghost stories, but the one thing that I like to hear about was "what was it like being "a slave"". This is the conflict that I have he told me that "...I was (13)thirteen years old when the slaves was freed! And it was a like a party ! we threw down our hoes and rakes and picks and was just dancing in the fields everybody!"

The newspaper says he was (89) eighty-nine years old, the Anniston Star April 16,1956, His death certificate states the same thing.

But I remember at the time of the funnel everyone was saying that he was a 101 years old in that case he would have been born in 1855. Still that dose not add up to being 13 thirteen in 1865. To be (13)thirteen in 1865 he would have to have been born in 1852.

Granddad died in my brothers and my arms the last thing he said was "John I am your Granddad" then he died . My brother and I was giving him a bath on Saturday night. It was not a fun job and John was sand bagging. John must have been 13 thirteen may be fourteen I was twelve going on thirteen. I remember and he was not senile.

Therefore I am saying that he was born in 1852 because I think I would remember how old I was when I got my freedom. I know that that date was a significant emotional experience for every African-American that was living then and every African-American living now.
