Huntsville Forester 1923
Died: There passed away at Novar a pioneer of this district in the person of Mrs. Charles McPhail on Dec. 6. Mrs. McPhail was born in Sunderland, Ontario, 71 years ago, and came to Novar in the fall of 1878 along with her husband, who predeceased her a year ago. They came by railway as far as Gravenhurst, that being as far as it was built, completing their journey by stage. They lived for two years in the shanty Mr. McPhail had built the previous spring, where their eldest son was born, moving to their late home on it's completion, where they resided continuously. The railway engineers made their head quarters at the McPhail home, during the days of the survey. It is interesting also to note that the site upon which Novar is built, consitutated at one time, part of the farm of the late Lachlan McLean, father of Mrs. McPhail.
She leaves to mourn her loss two sisters: Mrs. C. Godfrey of Huntsville, Miss McLean of Toronto; 7 children: Lachlan of Novar, Archibald of Guelph, John of Emsdale, Donald of Monteith, Mrs. E.M. Locke of Novar, Norman of Hamilton, and Mrs. Percy Sword of Maple Lake. She was buried at the Presbyterian Cemetery.
