If someone has created a profile of yourself and posted unfortunate pictures of you, how do you get
control of this profile. The person refuses to remove the pictures and have blocked people who he has created the profile for. The person who did this is not a relative, but the boyfriend of the sister of my cousins wife. We have asked the Geni for help and we have delivered a police report for breach of privacy law in Norway without any result. I would be grateful if anyone can help or make a suggestion for how we get taken control over my relatives' profiles from this person.

When the photos were uploaded, the person doing so, verified that he had the copyright and ownership of the pictures. So Geni must accept that their rules have been violated and take action.

We asked Geni to take action , but was then told that we had to first be friends with the person and then we could delete the images. But we can not delete them when he has blocked us. Some of the pictures he has ownership and copyright, but he does not have permission to publish them. Some of the pictures he has copied from facebook. We explained all this to the Geni, but they understood clearly not the problem.

We must also remember that Geni's servers is in the USA, where the Norwegian privacy rules not is valid.

But this is important. I hope indeed Geni will delete this pictures, it's very unfortunate for their seriousness.

I don`t think US law allow publishing pictures without permission. These pictures is taken in a privat setting and are not of general interest.

Yvonne,
I don't have any ideas or information for resolving this issue. I just wanted to say how sorry I am that this happened to you and your family and that Geni was used to create this painful situation. I hope that Geni will work with you to resolve it.
Maria

Wellwe could collectively delete all pictures in our profiles and warn other users not to place photos on Geni. This might inspire Geni to do something about misuse.

ACK! I hope it doesn't come to that! I have hundreds of photos on Geni.

It is only one Kjell Odding in the world and its me. On geni.com, there is 3 profiles and I dont got contact with the other two. Can someone help me find who is the creators of theese profiles http://www.geni.com/people/Kjell-Odding/6000000007621500427 and Kjell Odding. Several times they acted as me and i got a lot of problems. I've ask geni.com to delete dem but no help - they dont do anyting.
First - I've blocked them.
Next - attack is the best defense and I got some stronge friends who like braking legs and the day I find these people - they maybe need help.

Its a jungle out there and this is "the survivel of the fittest"

Now I will go for a walk with my dog and maybe its make me more civilized - right now I'am angry. Yvonne - I understand you.

Kjell Odding
Using the links you provided -- the first one, with proper capitalization, says you are the manager. You should be able to do whatever you need to with that profile

The second one, with first name spelled with small "k," says it was added by and is managed by Odd Odding. The profile says Odd is your father.

I don't know if this information is of any help. Again, as I said to Yvonne, I am so sorry that this is happening to you on Geni. Hope you enjoyed your walk, I know the dog did, they always do.

Regards,
Maria

Odd Odding is my father, 85 years old and he dont know how to start a pc. He is definitivt not det creator of the profil.
I start use geni.com at 23. aug 2009 and never done anything who result in a extra profile. Both this profile are made by other who used our names. First time I notis these profiles was when i find that Odd Odding had visit an other profile and I know that my father did not do it. Than I search and find this extra profiles. Its not a problem that there is some extra profiles but it is a big problem that someone act as us and use our name.

Thank you Maria and all of you who respond to this discussion. What if we require that Geni gives us the ability to report people who abuse the Geni or the person's privacy. Or we could make a signature of discussion in which we require that people who do not behave properly will be banned from Geni.

Regards
Yvonne

I think there are many traps to go when using Geni, that two different people can create an account on the same name should not be possible. Geni should in such cases notified both the people of this so that we could prevent fake profiles. It should also be a form of verification that you are the one claiming to be.

A good idea, it works on facebook.

5/23/2010 at 10:09 AM

I second this!

...we require that Geni gives us the ability to report people who abuse... Geni or any person's privacy.
...we require that people who do not behave properly will be banned from Geni."

While local privacy laws may apply, I very much doubt that photos of you give you "copyright" protection. I'm almost certain they don't, unless you had a contract with the photographer agreeing to that (e.g. fashion models).

It does NOT actually work on Facebook. It is extremely easy to create as many profiles as you like, with as many different names as you wish. It would take me all of 5 minutes to create yet another "Michael Trevor Lancaster" on Facebook, photos and all. I could do it with your own photos too.

While the problem Yvonne and Kjell describe IS very real and unfortunate, there really is NOT much Geni can do. There is NO real way to verify that you are really you. For that matter in Kjell's case how is Geni to know WHICH one of them is the real one? Or indeed that there truly is only one such person in the world? They can't.

In most specific cases, verifying identity is relatively easy: Ask for a copy of some official ID, verify it with the issuer, or have some trusted person check it. In the case of people with bank accounts, send a random small sum into their account and ask them to report back the number (that's how Paypal used to verify the bank account you linked to a Paypal account).

The problem is that no method works for everyone, it takes a HUGE investment just to figure out applicable procedures for different countries in the world, and the procedure leaves the verifier with personal information that it has no use for and yet has a responsibility to safeguard - and you can never expect the one who fails verification to pay for the procedure, so who exactly is going to cover the expense?

It's not easy.
