Just my 2 cents - this particular set of merges is one of the things that makes me uncomfortable here at geni in that the discriptions combine two different people in the same personage. William Rufus is the Conqueror's son; William Peverel is someone not related to either, although it's easy enough to confuse the two (I'm no historian, by a long shot, but it's easy to see the conflicts here).
Here's what wikipedia says about William Peverel, in the first paragraph:
"William's mother seems to have been a Saxon named Maud, daughter of the noble Ingelric. She was married to one Ranulph Peverel, from whom William took his name. Historically, it had been claimed that he was actually the illegitimate son of William the Conqueror, but this cannot be supported by the historical record.[1]
William married Adelina of Lancaster, who bore him a daughter Adeliza, born circa 1075, and a son, also named William, born circa 1080."
According to the history books, William Rufus had no offspring at all.
Since I've seen many more knowledgeable than I making the merges, I've continued; I didn't see any warnings. I'm guessing it will all be straightened out afterward?
With commonly mis-merged profiles I have adopted the following approach, largely successfully (particulearly for less well know historical profiles where merges might happen because there is not enough knowledge about the persons involved:
e.g. http://www.geni.com/people/Anne-Ottesdatter-Skinkel/600000000832156...
1. add "(NOT <name of commonly mis-merged individual>, do not merge)" in the Maiden name field
(you can access the maiden name field for men too, by switching gender temporarily - remember to switch it back when you are done)
-This makes the information show up in most merge scenarios, and should stop accidental merges from happening)
2. add additional information in the "About Me" field (at the top so that no scrolling is necessary), including biographical data, theories as to why the profiles are commonly mis-merged, and references to sources i.e.
"NOTE: this profile is commonly mistaken for <name of commonly mis-merged individual>- Please do not merge the two profiles.
<insert specific DETAILS here>"
