Birth order?

I was always told that Lena was the oldest of the children in the Steinhardt family. In addition, I was always told that Herman & Pauline had their four daughters first and then their four sons. My grandfather, Joseph, was the oldest of the boys and was born in 1912.

If so, then if Lena was born around 1909 (as per the 1930 census) she could not have been the oldest. Does anyone know the correct birth order of the Steinhardts of that generation?
