uncle frank was a loyal family man to his parents, siblings and numerous nieces and nephews. i got to know him when, as a child visiting in harvard square, cambridge, we often joined together with uncle abe and aunt sarah small and watched a tennis match between aunt sarah and cousin bernard, uncle frank and aunt sal's beloved and only son. Uncle frank also accompanied us when were driven to uncle abe and aunt sarah's farm in rochester, vermont after world war II. Cousin erwin small was often up there as well, where he experienced farm life, which eventually led to his veterenarian vocation. i also got to know uncle frank, pre-world war ii, when he visited uncle harry small and uncle dave in the 99 chauncy street textile bldg office where i was a part-time clerical assistant. uncle frank treated me to fish chowder at pieroni's and also to the "wizard of oz" movie.experiences with all these uncles at play and at work in downtown boston formulated my transition from history toward sociology and genealogy as career and consuming hobby..i still cherish memories of the forbes lithograph illustrated calendars uncle frank gave us for several years.
