Hi Michael,

@Michael Stangel - Is it possible to incorporate a URL button on the tab menu so that when in your album, much like the move feature, etc. The photo itself becomes a link.

Possibly in place of that, if an issue, that Geni allows for other formats on the upload, like SWF FILES limited megabites apply to that or psd file that can have a link via a text layer on it that is linked.

Perhaps Michael is temporarily away? @Noah Tutak - Maybe you can provide some insight on this issue?

Edward,
the @ trick only works if the tagged person is in your Family-Group, a Collaborator, or someone who's profile you have recently reviewed. this is why in NEITHER case, was the @name replaced with an actual link to the profile. For more info see: Tagging in general http://wiki.geni.com/index.php/Glossary#T and specifically http://wiki.geni.com/index.php/People_tagger

So in this case you'll have to use the [[ ]] trick, or wait, here you go: Mike Stangel and Noah Tutak.

I appreciate that and I have used that trick prior with some distant relatives, though, I had to copy their link location and using those very symbols and eliminating the numbers, while the last name remained redundant it did work. though this time, by days end I just sent Noah a message noting the link but I have used the normal method for them prior and it did work, somehow, perhaps some changes occurred and I knew when their profiles didn't appear, that they were not being alerted.

I appreciate the feedback and will await a response later at some point, different timezones, so it maybe early at this hour - Thanks for implementing that from your end and alerting them accordingly.

Sorry guys, I was quite busy trying to get the Projects feature done. Now that it's been released, hopefully things will return to normal for me. :-) We do want to create a more generic way to mention photos, documents, etc in discussions and other places on Geni -- it's in the works but we don't have a firm release schedule yet.

Hi Michael,

Projects feature? Seems like a forum environment where one can post and basically has links to other souses or websites, from what I can see at a glance, is this the intent of link building for Geni - It's a public arena and the topic here related to the private sector of the site. Which I assume doesn't do much to aid Geni, link wise.

If you allow for video uploads the SWF files being flash, should definitely be included - I understand that the photo section is basically designed to be static as opposed to dynamic but allowing for the uploads of flash with the same conditions as any video doesn't seem like any difficult implementation - Just a file type.

Ed, we released version 1 of the Projects feature yesterday: http://www.geni.com/projects (or just find "Projects" on the More menu in the main navigation bar at the top of each page) -- we've got a number of enhancements planned, but for now it's a place for curators to organize related profiles together, and grant edit access to those profiles to project collaborators. We'll have a blog post about it soon.

Mike,

I viewed the projects feature before I commented, and by all means, I'm not against you having multiple forms of public distribution, it is what generates traffic where as the privacy aspect of the site does not,

My request and intent, given the fact that most do not possess the ability to create animated graphics is feared toward attracting the living within my family to be more engaged by viewing what they may not normally see and get them reason to invite all of the lineage to join.

Want to be clear in understanding the Geni agenda and am all for the progress of your business - I'm just noting that my request are tiny in comparison and with no ill effect to your endeavors.. I'm all for growth with respect to Geni.

We're happy to support whatever video formats we can, but that's no small feat. In fact we use a third-party encoder (called On2, recently acquired by Google) so whatever video capabilities we have or lack, is the result of that third party encoder. If you have a video that you're having trouble uploading, you can email it as an attachment to help@geni.com and investigate whether our current encoder will support it, or what new encoder we might move to, that would.
