I have received a GEDCOM file from Geni, I have unzipped it but can't open it.
Has anybody a suggestion were I can find software to do this without having to submit my computer to scans by pirates?

there are a large number of free tools out there that will let you see and modify GEDCOM files. Family Tree Builder is highly recommended.

thanks Shmuel, i believe I didn't explain myself correctly.
We have a familly tree on, I downloaded part of it but can't open it. to use Familly tree Builder i would have to rebuild a new tree. Is that what you mean?

I have the same problem. I downloaded the GEDCOM file to my computer. When I open it, all I get is a lot of goobly gook symbols etc. :(
I am not sure what to do with this file? How does it work anyway?

if you download the program I referred to, you will be able to open the file you are talking about, that should the work already done on Geni.

It always fascinates me: If you don't know what it is and how it can be used: Why are you downloading a gedcom?

because Geni sendi it to me when I followed the link to download my tree and when I asked what software to use to open it thay said to ask geniuses like you on the discussion forum
