HERITAGE STRUCTURES - HUMATUN,S TOMB
The perfectly symmetrical Humayun,s Tomb, commissioned by the second Mugal Emperor, Humayun,s senior window, Queen Haji Begam in 1565, is of particular cultural significance as it is the first magnificent example of a garden tomb and architecturally the forerunner of the incomparable Taj Mahal as well as an inspiration numerous later monuments. Built by Persian architect, Mirak Mirza Ghiyas and oft referred to as “a dormitory of the House of Timur” the graves Hwives and Dara Shikoh, Shah Jahan,s scholarly son are housed here.

The impressive plinth is bedecked with sandstone arches. Consisting of multiple chambers, a unique future.
In the Tomb Chamber the plain white marble sarcophagus stands oa black and white marble platform. The grave is not assessable any more and lies in the basement below.

The white marble double dome is a complete half-sphere, surmounted by a final with a crescent in the Persian style. It was later that a lotus base was added as in the Taj Mahal.
