@anchit you should consider starting one tree for each of the great rishis, which forms the modern "gotra" lineage of many Hindus today -- and plays a big role in who could marry whom, etc..

it would also be helpful if Geni were to add optional data fields such as Gotra and Nakshatra, so we can keep track of these important family details.

for those who want to understand more about Gotra and Nakshatra, as well as the original seven sages (sapta rishis) from whom the "Indian clan" has descended, here are some quick references:

Great suggestion and this has been in my mind for a while. My concern in following it is as follows -

The Kshatriya genealogy is well captured in the Puranas and therefore can be created. There will always be sources of conflict but one can create the link. For others including the great rishis, we have a void of missing people for a large number of years. While the current generation can identify themselves with the Gotra's and do so for a few generations back they do not have the genealogy dating back to any of the rishis. I would be delighted to be proved wrong here and create the tree for a particular Rishi. I have come across on Geni many people who have put in a few generations of history and then created a "missing generations" person and linked up to one of the great rishi's. it is a personal choice but I am not sure it really serves the purpose. Do you have a suggestion for me?

On additional data such as Gotra/ Nakshatra, I am not sure GENI is going to come to the rescue soon. Geni has been getting such additional field requests from various other cultures and there comment so far has been to include this information in the 'about me' section of the profile.
