Does anyone know why Walter has his mother's maiden name of Waters as opposed to his father's name of Terrell?

I'm thinking Terrell is probably not his father. Typically when a child has the mother's maiden name, he's illegitimate.

On ancestry.com there are trees that have Walter Waters father as named Terrell, but I can't find any documentation for it, just other family trees. Before I had put a governor William Waters for his father, but apparently that was false.

My guess is that Terrell isn't his father, it's just a mistake..., but I'm new to genealogy.

There have been attempts to smash-merge him onto the Lt. Edward Waters line, WHERE HE DOES NOT BELONG.

Looks like he was a first-generation immigrant in his own right, *IF* Familysearch has the correct parents for him (William Waters and Mary Marrett, of Swaffham Prior, Cambridgeshire, England).

If they don't, he may possibly be an offshoot of the Philemon Waters line.
