I am taking the work of a relative who has done much work over many years keeping track of one wing of my family, which is huge. They have many adoptions.

Most recently I found one father of two who divorced his wife and gave his two children to his brother while he remarried and had a third child. Since both sets of parents are on my tree, I moved the children but now have a merge conflict.

How are adoption dates and such situations as above best handled in Geni?

I think it's best you leave the adopted children under their biological parents, and then link to their adopted parents through the wiki in their profile and mention that they were adopted.

Or vice-versa. Stick them under their adopted parents names, and link them to their biological parents.

What do you mean by the "wiki" in their profile

Maybe the answer will come with the other, but when I have both a birth date and an adopted date is there place for both on a child's record?

Douglas,
you can easily create an event in their time-line for the adoption.

What was meant by the "wiki in their profile" is the "About Me" section, which you can edit. This uses Wiki-format to enable you to create web-links to the other profiles.
