The identity of the wife of Robert Heppingstone who arrived in WA and was the mother of John and Ellen (and, presumably, Elizabeth Ann) Heppingstone is currently uncertain. Family tradition identifies her as Mary McKinley, but it was Mary Ann McKillar that Robert had married in Dublin in 1824. His first two children, Robert and Charlotte, were with Agnes McKinlay, so it is possible that the tradition has conflated the two names.
Further research is needed - and especially we need to find the record of the baptism of Elizabeth Ann in 1829!
The baptismal record of Elizabeth Heppingstone is in the Alverstoke, Hants. PR, and reads:
Elizabeth, daughter of Robert & Agnes Heppingstone, servant, Brockhurst, baptised 9 August 1829, born 25 July.
Is this, then, the same Agnes [i.e. Mckinley] who was the mother of his first two children, and if so, what was he doing marrying Mary Ann McKillar in Dublin in 1824? And why was the woman he arrived in Australia with in 1830 known as Ann?
