My father's family is related to the Butlers, Earls of Ormonde according to DNA testing. However, I am still researching to find our exact link. I know the Butlers were Normans who were descended from the family of Hervey Walter de Clare whose family came over with William the Conqueror. I have never researched back into their French connections.

The name Le Boteler, later Butler, was a ceremonial title bestowed on the noble in charge of wine at the coronation of kings. The descendents became the Chief Butlers of Ireland, and in the 14th century, James Butler became the 1st Earl of Ormonde.

I would appreciate any information on the de Clare roots. I know very little. The Butlers and FitzGeralds were two of the ruling families of Ireland for hundreds of years. They intermarried and were frequently engaged in power struggles between the families. Thanks for any information. Mary Butler Arnold
