Go to "more actions" on the right of the profile (under send msg) and "request mgmt" of the profile.

If there is no option for it, ask the manager to collaborate on the profile (there should be an option for that).

Hi Erica

Am I correct in saying that when I enter a profile into Geni and it is merged into somebody else's tree who already has that profile then that person is then the owner and I manage it with them. Is this correct?

You are both managers. The person showing most to the left, in bold, is generally the person who had the most complete data at event "merge." This really only affects messaging though; edit rights are entirely the same. And your collaborators have the same rights as if they were co-managers as well.

BTW the term "manager" isn't really useful. "Read / write" access vs. "Read only" access (any public profile) is more accurate.
