Data lost in merge

I merged two profiles for Melissa Young. The remaining profile

Melissa Eleanor Young

only has the information from one of the profiles. I think that, for example, the death date was on the other profile. The merge process did not give me the option to choose which information to keep. And I did not think to print off copies of the two profiles before I merged them.

1. Is there a way to retrieve the information lost in the merge?

2. On a going forward basis, is there a way to merge in such a way that information is not lost?

I believe the reason you weren't given the option, is because there was no conflicting data. Our records show the following information for the Melissa Young that you added on 2/22/2010, which is entirely consistent with what I see on that profile now:

first name: Melissa
last name: Young
middle name: Eleanor
maiden name: Young
living: false
gender: female
birth date: day:27, month:10, year:1843
