Klaas lived during the time that Napoleon Bonaparte ruled the Netherlands. It was decreed during his life that he needed to pick a surname for his family. He is the one who chose Blijstra, because he came from the town Blija. When he signed the registry, he didn't sign with his new surname, but the name he always used, "Klaas Andries" which meant Klaas, son of Andrew.
In 1813 he was on a list with other Dutchmen who refused to pay taxes to Napoleon. He died in 1822, one year after the birth of his last son, Andries Klazes.
