I was a high school student in Ballygunge Govt High School, Calcutta from 1966 to 1974. In one of the text books for Bengali class we were given to read a story by S Wajed Ali which goes like this:
A father and his son ~ 5 or 6yrs old walking down a village road when they heard someone reciting the sloka (poems) from The Ramayana from a house. They peeped through the window and found a small gathering of 5 or 6 people listening to slokas read out loud by the head of the family - may be in his mid 60's. Thirty years later, the 6yr old became a middle aged person and walking through the same village road. Now he is walking along with *his* son and heard the same musical tone of reading out Ramayana sloka - as if time stood still! In conclusion, Wazed Ali remarked, this is the real India where it is like a tradition.
