DNA your Destiny is an amazingly complex subject. We are indeed the sum total of all before us, yet our greatness according according to the Talmudic Sages is when one has control over one's natural inclinations and passions.

ie. It is east to be "kind" when that is your natural tendancy. There are two easily recognisable examples right in the Bible.

1. Abraham, who was the epitome of Kindness, abhorred child sacrifice, he was able to make a complete turn about and be ready to sacrifice his son. But that was not his ultimate test, which was rather to be able to in a passionate frenzy "Stop" when told to. ie. Always being completely focused on the moment rather than respond to one's emotions.

2. On the other hand, Moses was by nature inquisitive, questioning, action oriented and thought for himself, yet he was able to completely sublimate his natural tendancies for "action" to completely obey every word of God.

ie. C.S. Lewis “This moment contains all moments.” realizing this is the true key to creating your unique destiny.

You are so right! If you can control yourself, you are more powerful than a conquering general.
