After 4 games of the 1942 World Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Yankees, the Cardinals enjoyed a 3 games to 1 lead. With Game 5 tied at 2 in the top of the 9th, George "Whitey" Kurowski hit a 2-run home run that put the Cardinals ahead, ultimately winning the game and the '42 Series for the Cards.

Uncle Carl, who was 8 years old at the time, was listening on the radio. Because of Kurowski's feat, and the fact that Kurowski, too, was of Polish descent, Uncle Carl became a Cardinals fan.

On July 25, 2009 (Mom's 60th birthday celebration), some 67 years later, we went to a Cardinals-Phillies game in Philadelphia and we tailgated before the game.

Uncle Carl was wearing a retro Cardinals jersey and ran into a young man wearing an identical shirt. They got to talking and the young man turned out to be the grandson of George Kurowski! We all got to meet not only the grandson of George Kurowski, but his sons as well! (Sadly, George Kurowski had passed away around 10 years prior).

Uncle Carl was truly in his glory in this magical moment!
