Second Lieutenant, Company D, 7th US Cavalry. During the Battle of the Little Big Horn, he was with Benteen's Battalion, and fought in the hilltop fight, surviving the battle.

The son of Josiah B. and Cordelia Waldron Edgerly, a farmer in Farmington, NH. Graduated from US Military Academy in the Class of 1870. Appointed 2nd Lt, 7th US Cavalry, on 15 June 1870. Married Grace Cory Blum on 27 Oct 1875, in St. Paul, MN. Winifried, their only child, died at Fort Leavenworth in 1885 at age 3.

In the Sioux Campaign of 1876, surviving the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Appointed 1st Lt, Company L, effective 25 June 1876. Transferred to Company C, Jan 1877. Recruiting duty in Cincinnati, Ohio, 1873, where he was promoted to Captain. At Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, 1884. Duty at Fort Keogh, Montana Territory, 1885-86. Fought at Wounded Knee Creek, Dec 1890. Served in Texas 1892-95. National Guard Instructor, Concord NH, 1897-98. Promoted to Lt.Col. 8 June 1898. Transferred back to 7th Cavalry on 5 Jan 1899, and joined the regiment in Cuba. Appointed Lt Col, 10th Cavalry, on 19 Feb 1901. Appointed Colonel, 2nd Cavalry, on 17 Feb 1902, at Fort Myer, VA, and took the regiment to the Philippine Islands in 1903. Appointed Brig. General on 28 June 1905. Commanded the Cavalry School, Fort Riley, Kansas, from 1907 until his retirement in Dec 1909. Recalled to active duty in WW-I, he commanded the mobilization camp in Concord, NH, 26 July to 17 Sept 1917. Died at age 81, cause of death: chronic nephritis.
