Arthur Robert Doggart, J.P., was the founder of the well-known department store, Doggarts of Bishop Auckland. The store survived him by many years and was operated by his descendants until it closed.
Several of his family were also known for their involvement in sports. Three sons (Graham, James, Norman), two grandsons (Hubert, Peter) and a great-grandson (Simon) all played cricket, while Graham Doggart was also a football administrator.
