About Aaron Cilley

Aaron CILLEY, born 1746 in Beverly, MA, died 8 Dec 1824 in Cilleyville, NH, buried in Old Center Cemetery, Andover, NH, son of Benjamin and Judith (DARLING) SELLEY and grandson of Benoni and Elenor (GETCHELL) SEALEY. He married 3 Nov 1767 at Marblehead (now Windham, ME) Elizabeth DODGE, born 1743 in Beverly, MA, died 8 Dec 1824 in Andover, Merrimack, NH, age 81, buried with Aaron, daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (DODGE) DODGE.

A biographical sketch of Aaron CILLEY is provided in “History of the Town of Andover, New Hampshire, 1751-1906,” Part I, p 417: Aaron Cilley came from New Boston to East Andover about 1780, but he soon settled in the locality [i.e., the west part of Andover, at the head of Blackwater River] since known as Cilleyville, where he lived and died. He built the first sawmill at that place and for many years was the leading citizen in that end of town. Mr. Cilley was a farmer as well as mill owner and his son and grandson of the same name continued the two occupations during their lives. Both descendants maintained the good reputation of their ancestor in good citizenship, and the younger held many important offices in the service of the town.
