At first, he rented horses to Italian undertakers but he soon entered the business himself. One did not need a license to be an undertaker so anyone could take up the profession. Gutterman Undertaker's address was 49 Orchard Street, where the funeral parlor was located, and the stable entrance was on Allen Street. The stables were multi-level and ramps led to the stables on each floor. Abraham Gutterman emigrated from Russia in 1893 at the age of 31. (Note that the business was founded the year before). Two years later his wife, Rachel, and his four children emigrated. They lived at 142 Norfolk Street. In 1924, Benjamin Gutterman went to work for his father. The business name changed to A Gutterman & Son Undertakers and moved to 294 Grand Street. In 1935, the business moved to 153 East Broadway and changed its name to A Gutterman and Sons. Irving Gutterman, the new addition, became the vice-president, Benjamin, the secretary, and Abraham, the treasurer. The family moved from the Lower East Side to Brooklyn. In 1941 the business was called "A. GUTTERMAN & Sons". In 1945 it was "GUTTERMAN's Funeral Directors"

Rachel immigrated 1896 to New York from Russia (Now Poland).(8) She petitioned the court to become a citizen in 1899 in New York (NY). The 1930 Federal census listed Rachel, age 65, as wife of the head of household on Norfolk Street in Manhattan, New York, New York County, New York, 5 April 1930. Rachel's will was probated in Manhattan, New York, New York County, New York, 23 July 1941.(9)
Abram immigrated 21 June 1893 to New York aboard the SS Meier, steerage ticket no. 258 via Bremen, Germany from Russia (Now Poland).(10) He petitioned the court to become a citizen in 1899 in New York (NY). He resided in Manhattan, New York, New York County, New York 4 June 1900.(11) Abram was a Proprietor of a Stable in Manhattan, New York, New York County, New York on 4 June 1900.(12) Abram was listed as the head of a family on the 1900 Census in Manhattan, New York, New York County, New York. Abram was listed as the head of a family on the 1920 Census in Manhattan, New York, New York County, New York. Abram was an undertaker for his own business in Manhattan, New York, New York County, New York on 7 January 1920.(13) The 1930 Federal Census listed Abram, age 65 as head of household on Norfolk Street in Manhattan, New York, New York County, New York, 5 April 1930 enumerator was Moe STEIN. Abram's occupation in 1930 was a funeral home mortician New York (NY).
