A great grandson of Joshua Josias Massey and his second wife, Parthenie Caldwell, Mr. Robert C. Curren of Hueytown, Ala., who personally knew some of the older generation and has done considerable research on the Massey-Nations family, asserts unequivocally that the parents of Mary Nations Massey were Abraham and Rebecca Nations; that Rebecca was a "full-blooded" Cherokee. pp 104 According to the description of Mary Nations Massey passed by her descendants in the Birmingham area, Mary looked the part herself. The step-daughter of Joshua Massey, Mrs. Fannie McFall, b. ca. 1862, d. ca. 1950-51 who knew Mary Massey until her death and attended her funeral described Mary as having dark skin, jet black hair, and black eyes. A detailed physical description of her son, David M. Massey, which was part of this (Confederate) Civil War record is vividly descriptive of a person with Indian ancestry. He was described as having "high dark complexion, black eyes, black hair." p 101 Our Colonial Ancestors by James Dewey O'Brien, J.D., 1988.
