brief biography

Abraham Newell sailed from Ipswich, Eng, aboard ship "Francis." John Cutting, master, came to MA, settling in Roxbury, 1634. At time he was 50 yrs old. Custom house records show he was accompanied by wife Frances, 40 yrs old, & children: Faith, 14 yrs old; Grace, 13; Abraham, 8; John, 5; Isaac, 2; Jacob, b on passage. Faith is mistakenly named as Ruth in records. Abraham Newell made freeman, Mar 14 1635, d Jun 13, buried Jun 15 1672, age, per record, 91 yrs. Widow Frances d Jan 13 1683, age 100, per town records, which sometimes greatly exaggerate. Edward Porter & Abraham Newell were original proprietors of homesteads & orchards afterwards known as "Maccarty Farm." Tract contained 60 acres & lay betn Hawthorne St & Walnut Av, on both sides of Washington St, extending from Cedar on north to Marcella St on south. In deed from Abraham to sons, Isaac & Jacob, his occ is given as "tayler." Abraham Newell was 1 of original donors to Roxbury Free School which became Roxbury Latin School. 1664, Abraham Newell, Isaac & John Newell, & other inhabitants of Roxbury, signed paper requesting General Court make no chg to their present liberties as they felt they were in danger. Mar 1672, drive was started to help fund Harvard College. Apostle to Indians, Rev Mr Eliot hoped to remove "evil" by bringing to everyone's attention long hair on students & other men were starting to let their hair grow long. Paper was signed by Abraham Newell Sr, Isaac Newell & Jacob Newell. Abraham Newell d 6/13/1672, at age 88, which agrees w/age entered on his passage on "Francis". Rev John Eliot placed his age at 91 when entered in church records. Frances Newell was named executrix of husband's will. He divided most of his property amg sons & sons-in-law. On death of his wife, he decreed property which she used would go to eldest son, Abraham Jr. She d Nov 16 1682. Rev Eliot said she was "neere 100 yrs. old".

Tailor who came to Massachusetts Bay in 1634 on the "Francis" of Ipswich & settled in Roxbury.(On 30 April 1634, "Abraham Newell," aged 50, "Francis his wife," aged 40, "Fayth Newell," aged 14 [listed in the family of John Bernard], "Grace Newell," aged 13 [listed in the family of William Westwood], "Abraham Newell," aged 8, "John Newell," aged 5, and "Isaacke Newell," aged 2, were enrolled at Ipswich as passengers for New England on the Francis of Ipswich). Died in Roxbury 15 June 1672 "aged 91."

Married by about 1618 Francis _____. "Mother Newell" died at Roxbury on 13 January 1682/3 and was buried there on 16 January 1682/3 "near 100 years old."

Sailed from Ipswich, England, on ship named the Francis, considered one of the Pilgrim Ships, in mid April, 1634.

Arrived in Massachusetts Bay on May 30, 1634. He was accompanied by his wife Frances, daughters Faith 14 and Grace 13, sons Abraham 8, John, 5, Isaac 2, and Jacob who was born on board ship. Another daughter Robecca was born in Roxbury. The family settled in Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts. Abraham was made a freeman March 14, 1635. He was one of the original proprietors of the homesteads and orchards afterwards known as the “Maccarty farm.” In a deed from Abraham to his sons he is described as a “Tayler.” He was one of the original donors to the Roxbury Free School which became the Roxbury Latin School.
