About Abraham Detweiler Overholt

Many German craftsmen and tradesmen did learn to speak, read, and write in English. Abraham Overholt (1765-18 34), a Bucks County joiner, kept his records in a hybrid of Pennsylvania Dutch and Pennsylvania High German learned at a Mennonite parochial school.

[He] made "a walnut table with 1 drawer" in 1791 for one pound, ten shillings, whereas in 1796 he charged three pounds for one "with two drawers and hardware." Between 1790 and 1794, Abraham Overholt supplied seventy-one spinning wheels to his Bucks County customers, usually at a cost of fifteen shillings. A survey of Montgomery County inventories for the year 1810 revealed one spinning wheel for every third person. A major task for Pennsylvania German women until late in the nineteenth century was the countless hours of spinning yarn for household textiles. Dowries frequently included a spinning wheel.
