About Abraham Rosenzweig

Abraham and Dora were born in Russia, in an area that family documents refer to as "Russia" 1880-1920, as "Russia-Poland" in 1871 and as just "Poland" in 1861.

The original surname was ROSENZWEIG, and in fact, Abraham, Dora and their children will use either name as late as 1920. As the variation ROSENSWAIKE is so unusual, probably all ROSENSWAIKES are related, especially since all I found trace their lineage to England and Russia.

In the 1861 England census, the family lives at 94 "Stude Hillel" (perhaps a reference to a Jewish area?). In 1871 they have moved to 5 Edward Street, still in Manchester, though by then Charles, age 20, has moved out. He possibly is already in America. Also, a young brother Simon appears in 1861, but never after. He probably passed away as a child between 1861-71.

Here is the family:

1. Abraham ROSENZWEIG/ROSENSWAIKE 1820 Russia, d 1880-87 NYC + Dora 1825 Russia, d 1880-1900 NYC 2. Charles 1850-51 England, d1892 NYC 2. Jacob 1853 England + Rosie MEYERS 2. Leie 1855 England 2. Rebecca 1857 England 2. Simon 1859 England, d 1861-71? 2. Isaac 1860 England, d1909 NYC + Mollie NATHAN 2. Louis 1862 England, d1930 NYC 2. Morris 1863 England, d1925 NYC + Carrie

By 1880, the entire family has moved to the U.S. They live at 68 Ludlow, as part of the earliest wave of Jewish immigration to the Lower East Side. Four children remain at home: Jacob, who is now a cap maker like his father, Isaac, who is a tailor, and Louis and Morris, 18 and 17, whose professions are "huckster." The girls would now be 25 and 23, and can be presumed to have married.

Abraham and Dora don't appear again after 1880. The 1890 census, as you know, was lost in a fire. Abraham's son Isaac names a son 1887 Abraham (and Jacob's does the same, with a son born 1890), so we can assume that Abraham dies sometime 1880-87, and Dora sometime 1880-1900.
