The founder of Ballitore Boarding School was Abraham Shackleton born in Yorkshire, the youngest of six children of Richard and Sarah, on 27 August 1696. His mother died when he was six years of age and his father, the first Shackleton Quaker, when Abraham was only eight. Despite his youth at this time Abraham had been influenced by the religious nature of his parents, and, as he grew older he acquired a studious and literary nature which made him unsuitable for manual labour.
He became an assistant in the school of David Hall of Skipton, where he met his future wife, Margaret Wilkinson. He was subsequently employed as a private tutor by two Quaker families in Ireland, those of William Cooper and John Duckett. Both these two men suggested to Abraham that he should set up his own school. This idea became reality on the 1st of march 1726 with Abraham, them aged 29, choosing Ballitore as the site of his new school.
