About Abraham Jakob Waserman

Abraham Jakob Waserman was born in Warsaw on June 28, 1900 to a Jewish family. Warsaw was then part of the Kingdom of Poland / Congress Poland, which was closely linked to the Russian Empire. Little is known about Abraham Waserman's childhood and youth. He completed an apprenticeship as a tailor in Warsaw. According to his son Benjamin, he emigrated to the German Reich as a young man without permission to avoid anti-Semitic discrimination in Poland. He lost Polish citizenship and was considered stateless from then on.

Abraham Waserman probably moved to Berlin in the 1920s, where he became self-employed as a master tailor. On December 5, 1927, he married Alice Winterfeld, ten years his junior, from Teplitz-Schönau in Bohemia (today: Teplice / Czech Republic), who had started training in his company. A year and a half later, in June 1929, the couple's first son, Benjamin, was born.

Marriage record states, "The person named under 1, formerly a national of Poland, now stateless, and the one named under 2, a national of the German Reich, declared: We recognize the child born on June 21, 1929, according to birth certificate No. 1088 of 1929 of the Berlin registry office 13a with the first name Efraim Benjamin as having been conceived by us together."
