president of Garson Theatres
OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, May 7, 1963 Abram I. Garson Widely Mourned Abram I. Garson, for many years a prominent figure in business and community life in the Saint John area, died unexpectedly Sunday evening following a heart seizure at his residence, 187 Germain Street. He was in his 62nd year. Best-known for his movie theatre interests and earlier in extensive real estate business, Mr. Garson was active in all phases of community effort, both in the Jewish fraternity and the community at large. He gave his support to all worthy causes and his many private philanthropies were known only to the recipients. As president of Garson of Theatres Ltd. he also headed several related companies at the time of his death. Last October he was honored at a testimonial Negev Dinner, when a section of reclaimed land in the Negev Desert was given his name, and he received a scroll in recognition of his dedication to Israel, and service in his home community. Born June 15, 1901, in Dorbyany [Dorbian], Lithuania, he was a son of the late Frank and Ethel (Benjamin) Garson, and came to Canada with his family in 1906. They settled in Saint John where Mr. Garson received his education. When still in his teens, Mr. Garson opened his first film exchange, and later operated a movie theatre in Fairvale. He entered the business of steamship brokerage, and gained wide experience in importing and exporting through world ports. In the 1930's he extended his interest to real estate and for more than a decade owned and operated a number of the larger apartment buildings in the city. He sold the greater part of these interests following the Second World War. A past president of the Shaarei Zedek Congregation, he was active in the Liberal Associations of the city and province, and in the past had served as provincial delegate to national Liberal Federation meetings. Mr. Garson's first wife, Bertha, died in May, 1961. He is survived by his wife, the former Alice Fastner of Long Island, N.Y.; four daughters, Mrs. L .J. April and Mrs. I. A. Karrell, both of Saint John, Mrs. Sidney M. Tobin and Mrs. A. Myers, both of Toronto, Ont.; two brothers, Hyman Garson, Saint John and B.A. Garson, Montreal, Que.; one sister, Mrs. B. Alperstein, Brooklyn, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. The body is resting in the vestry of Shaarei Zedek Synagogue, Carleton Street, from where the funeral will be held this afternoon with service at 2:30 o'clock. Burial will be in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.367. Memorial plaque in synagogue: Our Departed - D4. Additional notes: president of Garson Theatres
