About Abram Stephens
Abram Stephens was the second son of Thomas and Jane Stephens, born in 1834 in Coshocton County, Ohio. He was married to Mary A. Wright on Sept. 29, 1858 in Coshocton. They were the parents of three children, Ada J. (1860), Clara (1862), and John Byron (1868). In May of 1864, at the age of 29 he was mustered in for 100 days of service as a corporal in Company H, 142nd Ohio Infantry. A blacksmith, at 6’4” he was tall and fair.
After the war, Abram went into business making carriages in Knox County, Ohio. In December 1879 he took on a new partner, Mr. Scott. As Stephens & Scott they ran a successful company, with departments for woodworking, ironwork, painting and trimming. A large show room displayed their various styles of carriages, buggies and wagons. “Mr. Stephens is a thoroughly skilled workman of large experience, and a gentleman who stands high in the community both in business and social circles.” (Source: History of Knox County-1881).
After the death of his wife Mary in 1873, Abram married Mary J. Thuma and they were the parents of one child, McKendre Fred Stephens, born Jan 26, 1885. Abram died on April 14, 1900 in Knox County, Ohio.
