About Absalom Eledge

My name is Tammy Eledge and I am researching my ancestor Absolom Eledge.

I am attempting to locate the parentage for Mr. Absolom Elledge. He married Mary McBryan March 7, 1844 in Andrew County Missouri.

I have not found any other Elledge's in Andrew County or Surrounding Counties from 1844 to 1850.

On the 1840 census there was an A.G. Elledge and Tarlton Elledge in Jackson County Missouri which is only a few counties away. Later in 1880 there is a John B. Elledge in Doniphan County Kansas where Absolom and his family lived frequently from 1850 to 1870.

I have found newspaper articles about Absolom, his civil war records, census records from 1850 to 1870 and his marriage record. The only one that gives a hint on parentage is the 1870 census, it states that his mother was of foreign birth.

According to census records Absolom was born in Indiana about 1822.

Can anyone help with this mystery? We were told by grandparents who are no longer with us that we were related to the Elledge / Boone line. As far as I can tell this line has been fairly well documented but I am asking if anyone has any information.

Please respond to the mailing list or my personal email at eledget@gmail.com.

Thank you in advance for the help!!!

The following are spellings and documents that are associated with those spellings:

  • Absolam Eledge - Missouri Marriage Records 1805-2002
  • Abrohun Eledge - 1850 Federal Census - Andrew County Missouri
  • Absalom Eldridge - 1860 Federal Census - Andrew County Missouri
  • Absolom Elledge - American Civil War Regiments
  • Absalom Eledge - American Civil War Soldiers
  • Absalom Eledge - U.S. Civil War Soldiers 1861-1865
  • Absolom Eledge - Civil War Power of Attorney (has his actual signature)
  • Absolem Eledge - Kansas State Census 1855-1925
  • Absalon Eledge - U.S. Fed Census Non-Population Schedules 1850-1880
  • Absalm Elidge - Kansas Compiled Census 1850-1890
  • Abs Eldridge - Kansas State Census 1855-1925
  • Absolom Elledge - 1870 Federal Census - Andrew County Missouri
  • Absalom Eledge - Newspaper Articles

As you can tell there are many spellings. According to census records he was unable to read or write. Although he did sign a power of attorney paper when in the civil war. I am still looking for connections under the Eledge / Elledge spellings but have almost exhausted them all, so I am going on to other known spellings.

Do you have anyone in your research that would correspond with my Absolom?

Thanks, Tammy Eledge

Marianna,

My name is Tammy Eledge the daughter of Roger Eledge of Nebraska. My grandfather was Roy Edwin Eledge My Great Grandfather George Riley Eledge My great great grandfather John Richard Eledge and my great great great grandfather is Absolum Eledge. I have some information on Absolum. Not a lot. I know he was born in Indiana around 1824. He married Mary McBrian of Tennessee in Andrew County Missouri in 1846. I also know they had 6 children. William Riley, Edmond R. , Mary J. , John Richard, Elizabeth and Emma. All the children were born in Missouri except Elizabeth and Emma which were born in Kansas. Have not been able to trace Absolum's parents as of yet. But I am not willing to give up. I have a pretty extensive family tree from Absolum down for William Riley and John Richard. I also have not been able to trace the other 4 children. I have census records for Absolum and his family, and also have a census record for Mary McBrian's family. Any questions or if you would like to get in touch with the family please contact us in one of the following ways.

Well everyone haven't found out who his parents are or any pension records but did find a new Newspaper Article.

The Kansas Chief White Cloud, Kansas Thursday March 10, 1864

The house of Absalom Eledge, on Rush Island, was burned on Saturday night, with nearly all it's contents. The family had barely time to escape, with their clothing, and a few other articles.

I have the pdf saved on my computer if anyone would like a copy. Does anyone know Rush Island? The only one I can find is Rush Island, Missouri.

Marianna,

Wanted to share the latest find and translation for this document. It was in the Civil War files for Absalom. Still no word on whom his parents may be.

If I am correct in making out all of the words in this Power of Attorney, this is a real find. Actually found this on Fold3 and it was under the search term Abrolem Eledge, yet another spelling. Here is what I think it says.

Know all men by those present that I Absolem Eledge of Doniphan County, Kansas state do hereby nominate _______ and appoint Captain Daniel H. David of _______ County State of Missouri my lawful attorney for the following _________ that whereas I the said Absolem Eledge a Private in Company "B" 3rd Battalion Missouri State Militia whereof D H David is Captain and expecting that said company will be paid off in the course of a few days, and is being impossible for me to be present owning to the illness of my wife whom I am obliged to go and attend. I there fore by these pursuits fully constitute and appaise said Captain David my due and lawful attorney for me and in my name receive all pay due of which may be coming to me and also from me and in my name receipt therefore witness my hand and seal on at the city of St. Joseph this third day of February eighteen hundred and sixty-two.

Absolem Eledge (Seal)
