The town of Seth was first known as Coon's Mill, named for one of its eldest settlers, Adam Coon. He had 3 mills at Seth on the Big Coal River. Slave owner who still had a former slave in his household long after the Civil War. Came to Boone Co. around 1820, established a mill on Coal River at Seth (first called “Coon’s Mill”) Progenitor of Coons and Kuhns still found in Boone and Kanawha Co. today. He was one of the first Justices of the Peace at the first meeting of the Boone County Court, and was instrumental in helping form the county.

First wife was Hannah Meadows, married about 1821 - 1822, daughter of Arris Meadows and Martha Byrnside. She was born 1804 in Monroe County, Virginia (WV), and died during childbirth in 1836. They had 8 children.
He then married (2) Nancy Ferrell 28 Jul 1836 and had another 8 children.
