A surgeon, her father sprang from Scotch-Irish stock. Her mother's family was English and French. Dr. Kirkpatrick, who died when she was six weeks old, would not have liked his daughter's career because he felt women should lead sheltered lives. He left his family wealthy and his widow, who raised Elizabeth and her brother Kirkpatrick alone, added to the family's wealth by selling real estate. Kirkpatrick, born seven years before Elizabeth, was also a realtor and was wealthy by twenty-three, having developed properties in Hawaii.http://en.metapedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Dilling"Elizabeth Dilling was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She was the daughter of Dr. Lafayette Kirkpatrick a surgeon from Virginia of Scotch-Irish ancestry. Her mother Elizabeth Harding was of English and French descent. Her father died when she was six weeks old.[1]Elizabeth Dilling was raised Episcopalian but attended a Catholic girl's school. Elizabeth Eloise Kirkpatrick Dilling Stokes (April 19, 1894 – April 29, 1966) was a publisher and head of the Patriotic Research Bureau and one of the leaders of the "Mothers' Crusade." Elizabeth Dilling was one of thirty defendants in the Great Sedition Trial of 1944."1920 - lived in Chicago, Cook Co., ILThe Edwardsville Intelligencer, 30 April 1966 › Page 7"Controversial U.S. Author Stokes Dies CHICAGO (AP) -- Elizabeth Dilling Stokes was a woman of strong and controversial conviction. At one point she was charged with trying to overthrow the United States government and setup a Nazi regime. Her writing and activities, strongly isolationist and anti- Communist, captured headlines for more than two decades. Friday, at age 72, she died in a Lincoln, Neb., hospital. A native Chicagoan, Mrs. Stokes first gained public recognition after she and her first husban'd, Albert Wallwick Dilling, visited the Soviet Union in 1931. She said the visit and Soviet boasts that the Communist world revolution would start with China and end with the United States prompted her to write her first hook, "The Red Network, A 'Who's Who and Handbook of Radicalism for Patriots," in 1933. She followed with 'The Roosevelt Red Record," in 1936; "The Octopus," in 1940; and "The Plot Against Christianity," in 1964. Mrs. Stokes helped organize and directed the activities of the Patriotic Research Bureau to foster her campaign against communism and her belief that the United States should stay out of World War II. In 1943 she and 29 others were indicted by a federal grand jury and charged with attempting to undermine the morale of, the armed forces through cartoons and publications. The indictment was dismissed, but they were Indicted again the next year. The legal battle and finally the trial went on for more than four years. A mistrial was declared when the presiding judge died. The indictment was dismissed In 1946 by another judge who said that the long delay in reaching a conclusion constituted a "travesty of justice." She was divorced from her husband in 1942, following a much publicized divorce trial in Chicago that was marked by injunctions, fist fights, tears, and contempt citations. She married Jeremia Stokes, an author and Mormon elder, in 1948. He died in 1954. In recent years, she retired from public life and made her home in Chicago. Mrs. Stokes had gone to Lincoln for surgery in Providence Hospital. The nature of her illness was not disclosed. Funeral services will be held Monday in suburban Glencoe."Elizabeth Kirkpatrick Dilling's children:i. Kirkpatrick Dilling, b. 1920ii. Elizabeth Jane Dilling, b. 1925*******************
