About Adam Gentles
The family changed their name to read Gentles Thomson. they went to Canada in 1857. It is thought that the family fell into bankrupcy. Adam Gentles at the time was a leather merchant and currier and went bankrupt in 1851. He owed 64 pounds,4 shillings and 1 pence to Dawson and Co, curriers. The family changed their name before leaving Scotland (refer to sailing 1859). Also in 1860/1870 cencus Adam is going under the name of Alexander.
