Dad played the accordion and clarinet, while Adolph played the violin and Albert played the bass violin and bass horn. They would play on Sunday evenings at birthday parties for relatives and friends, usually drinking beer from a keg.
Later they would add more men and play as a band for dances at Robstown, Moravian Hall, Bishop, Corpus Christi and Kingsville. The family would all go to these dances in buggies, two seated surreys or wagons. From 1914-1916 Dad Bartz and boys did lots of fishing as when it rained it was too wet to work in the fields. They would go camping on the Nueces River for 4 or 5 days at a time. They would go in a wagon pulled by horses and bring 200-300lbs of catfish. They captured two alligators on the Petronilla Creek-Dad built a cage on a four wheel trailer. People from all around would come to see them. Dad took the crocs on tour and also played his band for people in Corpus Christi and Kingsville. He kept the two years then sold them to the Corpus zoo for $40.
Author: Chris Sprangers Adolph Julius Bartz came to the US in 1893 at the age of about 16 yrs on the Vessel "EMS". He had to work on the ship to help pay his way. He still owed $50 so had to stay and work on the docks until his debt was paid. He was the last Bartz child to come to America. From New York, he traveled to Leadbetter, Texas where he lived with his Uncle Moritz on a farm. He brought his violin with him, and later also learned to play the clarinet and accordion.
