Adolph was the son of Noah and Mary Ellen Moore Dial. He was a World War II veteran.

He married Ruth Jones on Jun. 12, 1948. After her death, he married Harriet Elisabeth Caligan on Dec. 15, 1990 in Moore County, North Carolina.

After earning his master's degree from Boston University, he joined the Pembroke State College (now UNC-Pembroke) in 1958 and later founded the American Indian Studies program. He authored "The Only Land I Know: A history of the Lumbee Indians." The outdoor drama "Strike at the Wind!" is staged in the Adolph L. Dial Amphitheatre and the Adolph L. Dial Humanities Building houses the Departments of English, Theatre, History, and Foreign Languages on the UNC-P campus. In 1990, he was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives (source: http://www.uncp.edu/map/dial_humanities_bldg.htm).

  • **NOTE: In 1943, he received a degree from what is presently known as the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. In July 2007, the Heritage Walk was dedicated to serve as a permanent monument to all of the university's graduates from 1905 to 1954. Adolph was honored by having his name engraved on a brick in the Heritage Walk walkway in front of Old Main, the oldest building on the campus.
