Aegidius Strauch (born June 22, 1583 in Wittenberg , † January 22, 1657 in Dresden ) was a German Lutheran theologian.
Strauch's father Agidius Strauch († December 30, 1597 in Wittenberg) came from Brabant, from where he had to flee in the 1550s due to his Protestant belief. He had acquired civil rights in Wittenberg as a merchant and married in a third marriage to Gertraud Plateiß [1] . Just like his brother Johann, he was encouraged to study at an early age, and even after his father died, he was ensured that he could continue his education. Already in 1597 he attended the lectures of the professors at the University of Wittenberg , where his father taught him on October 11, 1589. Wittenberg had deposited [2] .
In 1601 he received an electoral scholarship and already on March 23, 1602 [3] , the academic degree of a master of philosophy, under the dean of Erasmus Schmidt . Since then he has given lectures and disputations, was admitted to the Faculty of Philosophy in May 1606 [4] . Strauch had originally pursued a study of theological sciences and was invited to the sermon on November 7, 1609 in Oschatz . Once there, he held Trinitatis on the 22nd Sunday and was called to Oschatz on December 9 as superintendent . To this end, he completed on February 16, 1610Licentiate in theology [5] , was ordained on January 17, 1610 at the Wittenberg town church [6] and began his official duties in Oschatz on February 21, 1610. Together with Abraham Suarinus , on November 6, 1610, he was awarded the Doctor of Theology at the Wittenberg University [7] .
In the same year the city of Delitzsch called him as superintendent on December 7 , which he initially refused, but he then followed the orders of the Saxon elector on February 28, 1611. Here he was invested on June 26, remained in office for three years and was appointed Elector Superintendent of Merseburg by Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony on May 10, 1614 . After being introduced on June 21, [8] he delivered his inaugural sermon on June 24. But after two years the next change was in the offing. Hardly at home with his family, the Council of Dresden called him in 1616, where he served as pastor at the same time as church council, as head consistory and as assessorwas introduced by Matthias Hoë von Hoënegg in the Upper Consistory and as Superintendent of the Dresden Inspection [9] . From 1623 at the latest, Strauch probably owned a vineyard in the Loessnitz , since a winegrower's house, today's Möbius house in Niederloessnitz , was probably built there for him that year .
The preaching office was not always easy for him, he often contracted colds and suffered constantly from colic. The early death of his two children also hit him hard. In 1646 an icicle fell over his head into his left thigh during communion, whereupon he always pulled his left leg. On September 21, he had a heartbeat that paralyzed him on the left side. The death of his elector is said to have taken him so badly that he then refused to eat and was unable to sleep, which is why he died.
He was buried on February 12, 1657 in Dresden's Frauenkirchhof in a candle arch grave, which became a family hereditary funeral. [10]
Strauch married on January 20, 1607 in Wittenberg Euphrosya Cranach (born November 4, 1590 in Wittenberg, † March 25, 1665 in Dresden) [11] , the daughter of Augustin Cranach . In that 50-year marriage, six sons and six daughters were born. The children know:
