About Aelia Verina

Her origins are obscure, but she was a daughter-in-law of the Emperor Marcianus. As widow of the Emperor Leo I, mother-in-law of the Emperor Zénon, and grandmother of the Emperor Leo II, she played an important role in Byzantine politics. She supported Zénon during the lifetime of her grandson Leo II, but turned against him after Leo died. In 475 she helped establish her brother Basiliscus as a rival emperor to Zénon, but he was deposed in 476. She herself was imprisoned after one of her plots was discovered. In 483 she allied herself with her jailer. Their rebellion was defeated, and she fled to Isauria (modern Armenia), where she died in 484.
