About Agnes Betsy Farnsworth

Agnes Betsey Bird Farnsworth’s mother, Ann Muir (1850-1911), was born in Scotland; her father, Kelsey Bird (1837-1909), was a descendant of three Mayflower passengers and was a distant relative of two U.S. presidents. She was named “Betsey” for her great-grandmother, Elizabeth “Betsey” Churchill Kennedy (1778-1862).

Agnes’ family lived in Massachusetts and New York until 1838, when they relocated to Missouri and, later, Utah, where she was born. Her grandfather, Charles Bird (1803-1884), was mayor of Mendon, Utah from 1872-76.

She and Joseph Farnsworth (1869-1944) married on Dec. 30, 1891, in Sevier, Utah, and relocated to Bonneville, County, Idaho, where they farmed and ranched. They had nine children. After 1915, they moved to Long Beach, California, where they built, owned and operated the Dundee Apartments, the Farnsworth Apartments and the Majestic Apartments. Her husband served on the Long Beach City Council from 1927-28 and ran unsuccessfully for reelection in 1930.

She was an early supporter of racial equality and, according to a great-granddaughter, frequently hosted local meetings of the International Peace Mission.
