The representative of this family claims, as heir male of the illustrious and noble family of GRAHAM, Earls of Strathearn, Menteith and Airth, descended from the Royal family of Scotland, the ancient earldoms of that family, which have remained dormant since the death s.p. of William, 8th Earl of Menteith in 1694. William, 3rd Earl of Menteith, d. 7 April, 1544, leaving with other issue (see STUART), a fourth son,

He also resigned, in 1576, the lands of Gartrenich, alias Auchmore, in the earldom of Menteith, to the fifth earl, apparently for the purpose of a regrant in favour of his younger son, into whose possession they passed. In a lease of the lands of Tulliallan, .1551, he calls himself "brother-germane to ane nobill and mychty lord, Johnne, Erll of Menteyth." Dying before 25 June, 1577, he left issue,

I. William, of Gartavertane, who on that date was served heir to his uncle Robert, of Gartmore, and whose son, Robert, s. to that estate, and was father of Gilbert, last male of Gartmore, who was s. by his sister Agnes in said lands which she conveyed to her father-in-law, William, 1st Earl of Stirling in 1636.
