A Pen Argyl man who shot and killed his estranged wife at a Wind Gap convenience store Saturday then turned the gun on himself died yesterday in the Lehigh Valley Hospital Center.
Alan C. Bellis, 31, of Pen Argyl Road was pronounced dead at 10:10 a.m. by Lehigh County Coroner Robert Weir, who attributed death to a gunshot wound to the head.
According to state police at Stockertown, Bellis entered the Shop Quik Mini Mart on South Broadway at 3 p.m., fired three shots from a 9mm semiautomatic pistol at store clerk Billie Lou Bellis, 28, of 103 N. Main St. Bangor, then shot himself in the head.
Mrs. Bellis was pronounced dead at the scene by Northampton County Coroner Joseph Reichel, who attributed death to gunshot wounds to the head, chest and abdomen. Reichel ruled her death a homicide.
Mr. Bellis was flown by MedEvac helicopter to the hospital, where he was reported in critical condition last night.
According to police, the couple had been separated since June 1. Police had no motive for the shootings.
The couple were the parents of three children - Shawn, 6, Sarah, 4,and Stephanie, 2 1/2 . Police said the children, who were living with Mrs. Bellis, are currently in the custody of relatives.
Bellis was a machinist at Ingersoll-Rand Co., Phillipsburg, N.J., for 13 years.
Born in Pen Argyl, he was a son of Harold and Doris V.A. (Ott) Bellis.
He was a member of First United Evangelical Church, Bangor.
Surviving with his children and parents are a brother, Eric of West Bangor, and his paternal grandmother, Lola Bellis of Pen Argyl.
