A former pupil (Bodeites House) of Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey. Alan enlisted in the Royal Regiment of Artillery in 1907; he was an outstanding athlete and had been the Army Quarter Mile Champion in 1908 and 1909. It had been a particularly good year regarding Alan’s running achievements in 1909, as in addition to retaining his Army Quarter Mile Champion title; he added the Army Half Mile Champion title, and became the Amateur Quarter Mile Champion.
