About Albert Stanhope Elmore

He was the son of Gen. John Archer and Nancy Ann Martin Elmore. Any child linked to his father whose year of birth is prior to 1805 (when he married Nancy Martin) are his half siblings. He and Mary Ann Taylor were married in Montgomery, Alabama June 23, 1853.

Major Elmore was educated in the institutions of Alabama and served through the Mexican War with the Fifth Louisiana infantry regiment. He was elected to major of the State militia in 1847; assistant clerk of the house of representatives, 1853-54; private secretary to Gov. John A. Winston, 1855; again clerk of the house through each annual session of the legislature from 1855 to 1864. His appointment to the Secretary of State in 1865 came from then Governor Lewis E. Parsons. Served again at the behest of Pres. Andrew Johnson in1866, collector of the port of Mobile, 1867.

He removed later to his plantation, Huntington which was located in Elmore County, where he resided until his death. Stanhope Elmore High School which was opened in 1965 was named in his honor.
