Lockhart, WV was named after me when I built the first store there, and established the first post office in 1866. In 1870 I also built the first school in the village which at that time was located where Nesselroad Creek meets Sand Creek. In 1889 a flood destroyed my store and many homes, the sign for the town was moved up the road to where Buttermilk Village was located.
I was a school teacher and in the timber business. I died from injuries while lifting at a saw mill.
