About Albert Richardon Shattuck
Well known banker Albert R Shattuck was married to Mary Strong the daughter of one time Mayor of New York City William L Strong. Albert was a son of William Bainbridge Shattuck and Elizabeth Caroline Richardson. He had made his fortune in New Orleans as a banker. He lived in New York City and Lenox Mass. In April 1922 four cutthroats entered the Manhattan home of Mr. & Mrs Albert R. Shattuck, robbed them, locked them with eight servants in the wine cellar. With a pocket knife and a dime the prisoners worked their way out, close to death from suffocation. Mr. Shattuck vowed to capture the criminals. In 1924 the last one was captured, was sentenced to 45 to 65 years in Prison. In 1912 Albert and Mary bought a home in Lenox Mass overlooking Laurel Lake from Edith Wharton, which remained in the Shattuck family till 1938. The home is now a national monument to Edith Wharton. Albert and Mary Shattuck had no children.
