Additional Biographical Information:

Bert was taken from his home on the couple's Welbekend holding on May 25 and was shot in his knee and back through his neck and head. His wife, Bets, was assaulted.

Bets heard the alarm just before 8 pm, but ignored it because their cat apparently activates it regularly. Afterwards, five armed attackers overwhelmed her as she went out every other night to close the garage.

She was taken into the house, where she and her husband, both 69 years old, were bound. Their neighbor reported that the gentle couple had sold coal and that the money that would be in the house was the attacker's target.
