Alden Smith (1973 - 2010)

Brief overview:

Alden (37), owner of Options Hair Design in Brooklyn, Pretoria, is believed to have been strangled, and found in his vehicle, an Audi A3, outside the Super Spar in Menlyn Park, on 24th December 2010.

Police are unsure as to where Alden was killed, and looked into numerous possibilities. One of them being that he was attacked at his home in Charles Street, then abducted and hijacked his vehicle, and killed him at the Spar.

Alden's salon alarm was triggered at around 22h00 and the security attempted to contact him.

The police arrived at Alden's sisters house to let her know that they had found Alden. His sister sat with him until the funeral home arrived. Alden's glasses were broken and his shoes were missing.

  • "Update: April 3 2013, the murder-case against John Seun Mahlangu, arrested and charged with killing the Brooklyn, Pretoria hairdresser Alden Smith was suddenly closed under very mysterious circumstances. The accused man, Mahlangu, walked from the Pretoria High court a free man. The public prosecution did not call any of the eye-witnesses to testify. A well-informed source close to the family said that 'the judge asked that the witnesses be called, but the DA insisted that 'the case was closed.'"

"Alden Smith appeared on the TV programme Carte Blanche, describing the Pretoria Metropolitan Police force’s extortion practices and widespread corruption. He had described details of being constantly terrorised by the metro-cops for not giving in to their demands for bribes. An exposé by the Pretoria News also revealed claims of torture, assault, kidnapping, extortion and widespread corruption within the Metro Police force."
