Alex Bernstein

Place, date of birth, and the complete first name Elie-Alexandre are taken from the attached French immigration records.

Doubtless he was given the first name Elie in memory of Elias Elaissohn, the beloved grandfather of his mother. His parents even married in the city of Vilna where elderly Elias spent his last years - instead of, as it was customary, in the city where the bride lived.

During the WWII, Alex was in French Army and was captured by Germans. He was a prisoner of war and was liberated only in 1945. In the end of war "he wore three uniforms: French, US, and Soviet" (see the youtube movie at the end of the section)

Not later than 1947 or 1948, Alex Bernstein started to work as a synchronous translator at the UN, and worked in the capacity for several years. Many years later, in 1978-81, he was elected and served as the president of AIIC, the international association of synchronous translators. While in his UN capacity he served as a Russian-French and French-Russian synchronous translator, several sources says that he knew most of European languages. Given that one of his second cousins knew at least 11 languages, and probably 13 or more, it sounds very plausible. On the other hand, according to the quoted book, Alex Bernstein had an easily recognizable French accent when speaking English.

Ильёй мальчика очевидно назвали в память о любимом дедушке его матери, Илье Соломоновиче (Элиасе Залмановиче) Эльяссоне: родители Ильи-Александра даже поженились не, как обычно, по месту жительства невесты, а специально ездили в Вильну, где престарелый Илья Соломонович провёл свои последние годы.

Во время Второй Мировой Войны Александр Осипович попал в плен и был освобождён только в 1945 году. В конце войны он "носил три обмундирования: французское, американское и советское" (см. ссылку на фильм в конце этого раздела).
